Equipment and light are important, but they are ultimately in service of a story. I believe that is true of all great photos of people - just look at the work of Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Annie Leibovitz. But I would also suggest that it is true for other photographs, in which a narrative, a memory, or a feeling can be found. Whether I shoot portraits, fashion, nudes or landscape, I’m in search of the subject’s story. That’s equally true for celebrities and everyday people. It’s especially so for long-term projects, in which the story evolves and finds its own voice over time. People want to share their stories, and will give themselves honestly to a photographer who cares to listen. I hear better with a camera in my hands.
